How to Pass Your NATIS Roadworthy Inspection First Time

A NATIS roadworthy certificate is required when registering or re-registering a vehicle in Namibia. Failing the test means wasted time, re-booking fees, and the hassle of repairs under pressure. Here's how to pass it on your first attempt.

What NATIS Checks

The NATIS roadworthy inspection covers safety-critical systems. Here's the full checklist:

  • Brakes — pedal feel, stopping power, handbrake holding on a slope
  • Lights — headlights (high/low), indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, number plate light
  • Tyres — minimum 1.6mm tread depth, matching tyres per axle, no cracks or bulges
  • Steering — no excessive play, power steering functional
  • Suspension — shocks, springs, ball joints all functional
  • Exhaust — no leaks, secure mounting, acceptable emissions
  • Windscreen — no cracks in the driver's line of sight
  • Wipers — functional and blades in good condition
  • Seatbelts — all fitted belts must work and retract properly
  • Mirrors — driver, passenger, and rear-view all present and secure
  • Body — no sharp edges, secure doors, no excessive rust on structural parts

Top 5 Reasons People Fail

  1. Worn brake pads — the single most common failure reason. If your brakes squeal or the pedal feels soft, replace the pads before your appointment.
  2. Blown bulbs — especially brake lights and number plate lights. Walk around the car and check every light. This is the cheapest fix and the most embarrassing fail.
  3. Bald tyres — tyres below 1.6mm tread depth are an automatic fail. The old coin trick works: insert a 10c coin in the tread — if you can see the full edge, the tyre is too worn.
  4. Cracked windscreen — any crack in the driver's primary field of vision will fail you. Small chips outside this zone usually pass.
  5. Exhaust leaks — a loud exhaust or visible smoke means failure. Check for rust-through on the exhaust pipe and manifold.

How to Prepare

Walk around your vehicle with the NATIS checklist above. Check every light, test every seatbelt, look at your tyres. If anything seems questionable, fix it before your appointment. The cost of replacing a brake light bulb is N$50. The cost of failing and rebooking NATIS is significantly more — plus the time lost.
